Objective

The objective areas under:

Fisheries sector contributes in socio-economic developments of the U. T. of Daman & Diu. The fisheries sector is one the major source of livelihood for economically backward population. We aim to support economically backward fishermen population and improve fishery sector by adopting modern sustainable techniques in various fields of fisheries. We generate employment for economically backward, cheap & nutritious food for the society and the foreign exchange for the nation. Considering various resources, trends, opportunities, weaknesses and threats department has formed strategies for the future. Strategies of the Department is as following:

    Marine Fisheries:

  • Strengthening of Infrastructure such as Construction of Vanakbara Fishery Harbours & Modernisation of existing Fish Landing Centre & jetties.
  • Modernization of intermediate fishing crafts.
  • Introduce Mericulture & Sea ranching.
  • Explore Deep Sea Fishing Resources (Introduce Tuna long lining).
  • Training and Extension.
  • Strengthening of marketing infrastructure.

    Brackish Water Fisheries:

  • Enhancement of the existing farms for Brackish Water aquaculture to augment shrimp production.
  • Training of farmers in coastal aquaculture and manpower development.
  • Establishment of new aquaculture farms as per norms of Coastal Aquaculture Authority.
  • The present thrust is to augment the shrimp production through increasing the productivity of existing farms as well as bringing more area under brackish water farming.

    Main Objectives:

  • Providing infrastructure facilities for a safe landing, berthing and unloading of fish catches of mechanized fishing vessels and traditional fishing craft.
  • Repair and renovation including improvement of hygienic conditions of the existing facilities created so far under the Central Sector and Centrally Sponsored Schemes.
  • To augment fish production through the development of inland resources by adopting judicious stocking of quality fish seed and suitable management practices.
  • To create employment in the rural areas.
  • To improve the socio-economic conditions of the fishermen and the nutritional status of the general public.
  • To earn foreign exchange.
  • To equip mechanized fishing vessels of less than 20-meter length with necessary safety equipment like GPS, VHF, etc.
  • To develop Post Harvest infrastructure facilities with a view to augment fish production, ensuring food safety, generate more self-employment opportunities for fisherwomen in fish handling marketing and empowering women.
  • To encourage fisher folk to exploit the Underutilized fishery resources and to reduce fishing pressure in the inshore areas.
  • To promote sustainable, eco-friendly aquaculture practices. To modify the present fisheries legislation to suit the present conditions.
